Our stop off in Dong Hoi ended up being short and sweet because the weather was pretty bad; it didn’t really rain but it was very grey and the sea was angry… Not exactly the beach weather you’d hope for.
However, the hostel – Beachside backpackers, was in a really nice spot so we spent 36 hours chilling, playing cards, walking down the stormy beach,
eating and chatting with like-minded travellers who had discovered this quiet place off the beaten track. It was evidently one of those places where people planned to stay for two days and ended up staying for two weeks. The hosts, a Vietnamese guy and his Irish girlfriend, were very accommodating, there was no pressure to do anything and its right by the beach with a bar stocked with beer so you can understand why!
These are little boats too. You see the locals bobbing about on them whilst they fish, watching them surf back in is cool.
We stuck to our guns though and just stayed the one night, although the offer of staying the second night and having a BBQ on the beach was tempting. Instead we jumped on a local bus for an hour to Phong Nha and the caves of Vietnam.
So yeah maybe we’ll come back 😛
